BRISTOL, Va. "? Autumn Arney always enjoys playing against the University of Virginia's College at Wise. It turned into a memorable experience for the Virginia Intermont College junior on Saturday.
Arney recorded a triple-double ? 18 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists ? to highlight VI's emphatic 92-60 Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball win over shorthanded UVa.-Wise on Saturday afternoon at Virginia High's Bearcat Den.
It was easily Arney's best performance of the season. She had 10 points in the first half to help Virginia Intermont (7-16, 4-8) take control and when she wasn't scoring or hauling down rebounds, she was busy distributing the ball to her teammates.
"She's really stepped up this whole year," VI coach Jaclyn Dickens said. "When she's going full speed, we're all going full speed."
The win was particular sweet for Arney, who attended J.J. Kelly High School in Wise.
"I probably looked forward to it more when [former high school teammates] LaShay [Collier] and the Helton sisters played for them," Arney said. "But it's still my hometown, and it's always good to beat them."
It also avenged VI's 75-73 setback to the Highland Cavaliers on December 4 in Wise. However, UVa.-Wise (4-20, 2-10) dressed just seven players on Saturday and didn't resemble the team from the earlier matchup.
"The two that were sitting (Lauren Jervis and Mindy Carter) were key players against us the first time," Dickens said. "We just wanted to run on them and look to attack inside."
Odle handled that part. The freshman finished with a game-high 25 points, many of which came thanks to dishes from Arney.
"She's always there," Arney said. "I always know if I pass to her, she'll catch it and score. I always look for her if I need help or anything."
Kendra Newman (16 points) and Brianna Garrison (12 points) also scored in double figures for the Cobras, who shot 47.4 percent from the field and held a 52-23 rebounding edge.
"I think we've all been practicing hard to step up our game," Arney said. "I think everybody played good together today."
Freshman Meghan Rutherford led UVa.-Wise with 16 points and seven rebounds. Rutherford, a Bristol native and former John Battle High School star, had a large cheering section for the game in her hometown.
Adrienne Womack added 14 points for Wise, while Brittany Maxwell and Shandi Edwards finished with 13 points apiece in the loss.
